        What role does microcrystalline cellulose play

        Microcrystalline cellulose is a pure product of cellulose depolymerization. Prepared from natural cellulose, it is odorless and tasteless crystalline powder. Products can be used as excipients and tablet disintegrators in the pharmaceutical industry; dietary cellulose, an important functional food base material, is an ideal health food additive in the food industry; thixotropy and thickening properties can be used as thickeners and emulsifiers for water-based coatings in the paint industry; and fillers, thickeners and emulsifiers can be used in cosmetics. It has good emulsifying ability for oily substances, and can be used as tackifier and filler in wet leather production to make the surface of artificial leather smooth and uniform in thickness. It can be seen that microcrystalline cellulose is widely used and the demand for this product will continue to increase in China.

        Ultrafine edible cellulose

        Microcrystalline cellulose, or MCC for short, is a granular powder product of about 10 microns in size, which is hydrolyzed by natural cellulose in acidic medium to reduce its molecular weight to a certain extent. Mainly used as drug excipients in the pharmaceutical industry, it has the following advantages over starch or starch derivatives:

        (1) It is easy to disintegrate, that is, the drug is easily disintegrated after entering the stomach and absorbed by the human body.

        (2) It is not easy to mould because cellulose is in beta-glucose configuration and starch is in alpha configuration. In general, amylase does not attack cellulose.

        (3) Cellulose is not absorbed by the human body and does not react easily to the drug it carries, so it is safer. The disadvantage is the high price.

        Another product of microcrystalline cellulose is colloid (MCC gum), which is a kind of water solution with MCC powder as raw material and becomes colloid through special gelation device. MCC colloids have the following properties:

        (1) It is a thixotropic colloid with high concentration and high viscosity, but in fact, it is easy to flow as long as external forces are applied. It is scooped with a spoon without tail.

        (2) When the concentration is 3%, the colloidal viscosity can reach 3000-5000mPa.s.

        (3) Colloids have good cold and thermal stability, i.e. little loss of viscosity during freezing and heating cycles.

        (4) Cellulose is composed of glucose, but the human body can not digest beta-glucose, its calorific value is zero, so microcrystalline cellulose in the human body only moves with food but not absorbed by the human body, it can help digestion to reduce or prevent digestive system diseases.

        Pharmaceutical industry: drug excipients (powder), capsules (powder, direct use)

        Food industry: low calorie ice cream (instead of part of milk fat), salad dressing (instead of part of milk fat), rich fiber bread (powder)

        Cosmetics: Basic ingredients (moisturizing, skin care)
